iWeltmuseum WienInnere Stadt
A participatory room where communities from across Vienna reflect on the world and the museum, with three invited artists. Free admission.
Munira Mohamud has put a bunk bed in the Weltmuseum, dressed in textiles from Somalia, and called it Come to the Museum and Go to Sleep. Elsewhere in the space, a station titled "Is this really the world?" questions the Mercator map that has dominated for centuries and lays out other ways of drawing the planet.
The museum says this is not a classic exhibition but two free rooms that change as people use them. Tayla Myree is building an archive of letters to Black people who lived in Vienna in the 17th and 18th centuries, Abigail Marcillo's photographs trace colonial history into precarious work in Ecuador and in Vienna, and an anticolonial library keeps growing. It looks ahead to the museum's centenary in 2028.
You're asked to add to it: the wall text tells you to sit, read, work or simply take a deep breath. There is no fixed narrative to follow. Entry is free, and Tuesdays run to 9pm.
Munira Mohamud, Come to the Museum and Go to Sleep
A bunk-bed installation hung with textiles from Somalia, bringing private, domestic life into the public museum.
Tayla Myree, letters to those who were once here
A growing archive of letters written to Black people who lived in Vienna in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Abigail Marcillo, Old Town Passages
Photographs from 2025 that follow colonial history into Ecuador's precarious working world and draw parallels with working conditions in Vienna.
The "Is this really the world?" station
A station that takes apart the distortions of the Mercator projection and sets alternative maps of the world beside it.
The anticolonial library
A growing shelf of books on how colonial power shaped what is known, which you are welcome to sit down and browse.
You want a classic exhibition: the museum calls it an open working space with no fixed narrative.
