Vienna's museum of world cultures holds more than 400,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects, from the only surviving ancient Mexican feather headdress to James Cook's Polynesian collection, Benin bronzes and a model daimyō residence from Edo Japan. Founded as the ethnology department of the court natural history museum and renamed Weltmuseum Wien in 2013, it reopened in 2017 with 14 galleries in the Corps de Logis of the Neue Burg on Heldenplatz. The permanent galleries confront how the objects came to Vienna, including colonial acquisition, alongside changing special exhibitions.
