Niwa's new work at the Secession is called Travelling Backwards Along the Paths Taken by People Who Left Their Country. His London gallery, Edel Assanti, says his titles give an exhaustive account of the performance they contain, so take this one literally. The conversations behind it took place at the Ute-Bock-Haus, the Vienna house of the refugee project founded by the late campaigner Ute Bock.

The Secession says Niwa makes no static objects. His work is actions, encounters and moments that disrupt systems of control, carried by humour, negotiation and endurance. You may know the method from Going to San Francisco to Dispose of My Garbage (2006), in which he took his household rubbish on a plane between Japan and the US.

It opens on 4 December. Admission is €13 (students under 26 €7.50, under-12s free) and also covers the Beethoven Frieze. Entry is free on the first Wednesday of each month, and English tours run on Saturdays at 11:00.
