Vasarely & Adrian: Dynamic Grids

Now showing26 June 2026 – 10 January 2027€17.90

Op Art pioneers Victor Vasarely and Marc Adrian side by side: geometric grids and optical effects designed to set the viewer's eyes in motion.

More in Vienna

Stand in front of one of Marc Adrian's glass montages, take a step to the side, and the picture rearranges itself. He painted geometric shapes and set them behind ribbed industrial glass, so what you see depends on where you stand. The show keeps playing tricks like that across about 70 works.

It is the first time Adrian, a Viennese artist and the only Austrian in MoMA's 1965 Op Art survey The Responsive Eye, has been hung beside Victor Vasarely. The route is chronological, from Adrian's 1950s "jump pictures", whose perspective pulls you into depth, to Vasarely's Vega series and big hexagon paintings that make flat canvas seem to bend. The curator, Constanze Malissa, says both used grids and basic shapes to unsettle perception.

The Albertina's director called it visually quite demanding, so pace yourself. It is on the basement level of Albertina Modern, included in the €17.90 ticket, and now runs to 10 January 2027, two months longer than first announced.

Look for

  • Adrian's ribbed-glass montages

Look for Aufbruch ins Innere: coloured geometric shapes behind patterned industrial glass that shift and regroup as you walk past.

  • The jump pictures

About 15 small abstract-geometric works from 1951 to 1955 whose perspective flips between near and far the longer you look.

  • Vasarely's big hexagons

Large hexagon paintings built from flat geometry that read as curving space and tumbling cubes.

  • Kiu-Siu (1963)

Vasarely's canvas of more than two metres a side, green and red lines locking into partial squares, and the show's lead image.

  • Adrian's portrait watercolours

A 1970s series where hair, eyes and mouths are broken down into stencil-like blocks of contrasting geometry.
