imumok – Museum moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig WienNeubau
Allan Kaprow's 1963 participatory piece, in which visitors rearrange furniture, anchors a show on collective action and the museum as a temporary studio.
Preview: written before the show opened
"Anyone can find or make one or more rooms," Allan Kaprow's 1963 instructions begin, then the rule that matters: everyone else can come in and arrange the furniture "as they see fit. Each day things will change." It was a tribute to his teacher, Hans Hofmann. On Level -2, you are the one doing the pushing and pulling. Anyone who has lived in a Vienna flatshare already knows how that goes.
The instructions themselves belong to mumok: 55 cards in a wooden box, which came with Wolfgang Hahn's collection. Kaprow reinvented the piece in this building in 2002, and treated every restaging as a new version. This time it sits at the core of a larger show about collective action and art without a single author, with collection works on turning the museum into a temporary studio.
Come to take part rather than look on. It opens on 14 November and is on the standard ticket: €18, €15 reduced, under-19s free, Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00.
Kaprow's furniture rooms
Look for furnished rooms you are invited to rearrange yourself, following Kaprow's 1963 instructions, so the layout changes from one day to the next.
