This work lives and dies on a loop in the Frozen Transparency space. When another teamLab work enters, such as the light fish of The Way of the Sea or the Flutter of Butterflies Beyond Borders, it dies. When the room empties again, it is born again. It is the shyest thing in the building: one passing shoal of fish and it's gone.

Like the other Frozen Transparency pieces, it plays a trick on your camera. Take a photo and teamLab says you get a flat painting; look up from the screen and you see a solid form, like a sculpture set inside glass. The sound is by Hideaki Takahashi.

It is in the Borderless World section and comes with the general ticket, priced by date for adults (JPY 3,600 to 5,600). Photos are allowed, but not flash, tripods or selfie sticks. The museum lists the work until 7 November.

Look for

  • The empty-room rebirth

Wait for the other works to leave the Frozen Transparency space: once nothing else is there, the life is born again.

  • The die-off

Watch for fish from The Way of the Sea or a swarm of butterflies drifting in: the life dies as soon as another work enters.

  • The camera test

Photograph it, then look without your phone: teamLab says the shot is a flat painting, while your eyes see a solid form like a sculpture in glass.

Good for

  • First-Timers
  • Teenagers

With kids

Ages 4 to 12 pay JPY 1,500, ages 13 to 17 JPY 2,000 to 2,800 by date, and under-4s go free. Strollers aren't allowed inside.
