Memory of Topography

In autumn the rice in this room is gold. It grows in real time: small green shoots in spring, taller in summer, golden by fall. You walk up a slope, and the air you push around bends the stalks and scatters flower petals in different directions.

The floor is built with hills, a rural mountain landscape you climb through, and everything is rendered live, not looped. Other works pass through: a shoal of light fish from The Way of the Sea swerves around you and takes on the colour you've been assigned. The rice harvest in Minato this year takes place in a basement.

Time Out read it as a piece about nature against human cultivation. It is one room inside teamLab Borderless, covered by the general ticket (adults JPY 3,600 to 5,600 by date), and the seasonal showing runs September to November. On many October and November weekdays the museum stays open until 10pm, with last entry an hour before closing.
