iMAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and TechnologyBelém
More than 300 books and catalogues look back on ten years of MAAT's publishing and exhibition programme.
Eduardo Batarda picked everything about his 2016 book Misquoteros himself: the cover colour, the typography, the photographic style and the layout. Ana Jotta did the same a year later with Bónus, a newspaper. Both sit among ten years of MAAT's catalogues, guides, artists' books and activity booklets in MAAT Central.
You walk along one long counter that runs around the room from 2016 to 2026, and almost everything on it can be picked up and read. Panels beside it give the details and reproduce pages from books you can't touch. In 2020 and 2021 every leaflet was four-hole punched to a fixed size so the lot fitted one binder. Two ten-sided plinths hold only the exhibition guides from 2023 on.
The museum shows these as design objects, so it's for people who like books as things. It comes with the MAAT ticket, €16 or €12 for residents in Portugal, and MAAT is closed on Tuesdays. The design team leads a tour on 23 January at 17:00.
Misquoteros, Eduardo Batarda (2016)
A book where the artist chose the cover colour, typography, photographic style and image layout himself, rather than following the museum's series design.
Bónus, Ana Jotta (2017)
A newspaper instead of a catalogue, again shaped entirely by the artist, from its typography to its photographs.
The 2020 to 2021 binder
Leaflets, booklets and kids' folios from the pandemic years, all punched with four holes at one fixed size and gathered in a single binder with thematic dividers.
The two decagonal plinths
Ten-sided stands given over entirely to the exhibition guides MAAT has printed since 2023, in the uniform design it adopted that year.
You want art on the walls: this is publications on a counter, with text panels.
