Founded by King Luís in 1863 and housed in the Jerónimos Monastery complex since 1962, Portugal's Navy Museum tells the story of the Portuguese and the sea across military, merchant, fishing and leisure shipping. Around 2,500 of its 18,000+ objects are on display, from Discoveries-era ship models and navigational instruments to the royal cabins of the yacht Amélia. The vast Galeotas Pavilion holds 18th-century royal barges, traditional boats and the Santa Cruz seaplane that completed the first aerial crossing of the South Atlantic in 1922.
