Founded in 1893 and installed in the former monks' dormitories of the Jerónimos Monastery since 1903, the National Archaeology Museum holds Portugal's leading collection of prehistoric, Roman and medieval finds, along with Egyptian antiquities and ancient gold treasures. It has been closed to the public since 18 April 2022 for a deep renovation funded by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR); a second phase of works has no announced reopening date.
