Preview: written before the show opened

Menzel's Iron Rolling Mill (1872 to 1875), a painting of men hauling glowing iron through a factory, is paired with Andreas Gursky's photograph Singapore Bourse II from 1997. One shows the machine age at work, the other a stock exchange, and the museum leaves you to connect them.

That is the format throughout. For the Alte Nationalgalerie's 150th anniversary, works from the Nationalgalerie's own collection by 20th- and 21st-century artists are hung beside 19th-century art on all three floors. The museum calls these "selective encounters" and wants associative looking rather than a chronological route. Warhol's Diamond Dust Shoes meets a Cézanne still life, and Sarah Lucas's photographic work faces a self-portrait by Sabine Lepsius.

Warhol's glittering shoes are also what your hallway looks like after a Zalando order you are sending back. The second floor is closed until 21 October for the changeover, so the show starts with the opening on 22 October. Online tickets are available, and the museum is closed on Mondays.

Editor's pick

For its 150th anniversary the museum lets the later centuries in: Gursky, Lucas, Miró and Warhol from the Nationalgalerie collection hang beside 19th-century art on all three floors. A birthday where the guests are younger than the house.

Look for

  • Menzel and Gursky

Menzel's Iron Rolling Mill (1872 to 1875) is set against Gursky's Singapore Bourse II (1997), a factory floor facing a stock exchange.

  • Warhol and Cézanne

Warhol's Diamond Dust Shoes is paired with a Cézanne still life, a genre it revisits more than a century later.

  • Lucas and Lepsius

Sabine Lepsius's self-portrait is shown against Sarah Lucas's photographic work, so two artists' takes on how to portray themselves.

  • Graubner and the Impressionists

Gotthard Graubner's colour-space painting Tojama II hangs among Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.
