While preparing this show, Casal Lambda's president went back through the association's post: letters handwritten from the 1970s until about 2000, sent to a PO box so nothing would arrive at the writer's home. They came from across Catalonia and Spain, and from Denmark, the Netherlands and Latin America.

Casal Lambda opened in Barcelona in 1976 as a meeting place, documentation centre and safe space, when homosexuality could still be prosecuted. Its volunteers wrote and designed this anniversary show themselves. You start with what the Casal is, move through its big cultural projects, including the Fire film festival it has run since 1995, then a timeline of LGBTIQ+ activism in Barcelona. The last rooms are the archive, with display cases of objects and the magazine Lambda, first printed in 1978, and the banners that were carried through the streets.

Entry is free, and the show closes on 8 November. The museum stays open until 20:00 on Wednesdays and shuts at 14:30 on Sundays.

Look for

  • The magazine Lambda

Look in the display cases for the association's magazine, first printed in 1978, which in the late 80s and 90s reached most public libraries in the province of Barcelona.

  • The archive room

Objects and curiosities from 50 years of Casal events that, as the curator puts it, you wouldn't have seen even if you'd been there.

  • The street banners

The show ends on visibility: the banners and artworks that LGBTIQ+ activists carried through Barcelona's streets.

Good for
