Run by the Generalitat de Catalunya and opened in 1996, the Museum of the History of Catalonia fills the Palau de Mar, the former General Stores and the only building of Barcelona's old industrial port still standing. Its interactive permanent exhibition, The Memory of a Country, walks through eight periods of Catalan history, from prehistoric roots and Roman Tarraco to the Civil War, the dictatorship and the present day. Temporary exhibitions, guided tours and family activities complete the programme.
