Museu Frederic Marès

The sculptor Frederic Marès (1893–1991) gave his collections to Barcelona in 1946, and the museum opened two years later in part of the old Royal Palace of the Counts of Barcelona, beside the cathedral, whose courtyard garden survives. Its sculpture galleries trace Hispanic carving from antiquity to the 19th century, dominated by polychrome wood figures and including a Romanesque relief attributed to the Master of Cabestany. The 17-room Collector's Cabinet, which Marès called his "Sentimental Museum", packs in fans, pipes, clocks, toys, keys and photographs of 19th-century daily life, and his study-library shows his own sculpture.
