In October 1887 a twelve-year-old from Lleida arrived in Paris with his mother and siblings. Within weeks he was an auditing student at the Conservatory, and he had started a diary.

That diary, kept for almost thirty years, is the thread of the show, and the Lleida city council says it is displayed publicly for the first time in Europe. Around it sit unpublished documents, correspondence, photographs and concert programmes from several collections, following Viñes's friendships with Maurice Ravel, Enric Granados, Isidre Nonell and Miquel Llobet. If your own diary stopped in the second week of February, this is what almost thirty years of keeping at it looks like.

The Museum frames it as a story of early hardship, perseverance and talent. It closes on Sunday 11 October. Entry is the museum ticket, €6 (€4.50 reduced), free on Thursdays from 6pm to 9pm and on Sundays from 3pm. The museum is closed on Mondays.

Ricard Viñes's diary and unpublished documents follow the pianist from arriving in Paris aged 12 to championing new French music in the Belle Époque. Most of us, at 12, only managed the diary part.
