Installation by Gerard Valverde Ros and Marc Villanueva: a magnetic instrument for remixing recordings of Barcelona's 1989 Contemporary Music Week.
Preview: written before the show opened
In the archive behind this installation, budgets, letters, scores and cassettes from Barcelona's contemporary-music documentation centre (1986 to 1994), one phrase turns up more than any other: "the problem of music". Gerard Valverde Ros and Marc Villanueva spent a residency at the museum going through those cardboard boxes.
The artists digitised recordings of the 2nd Contemporary Music Week, held in Barcelona in 1989, and built a magnetic instrument modelled on the Stokos IV, a synthesiser Lluís Callejo made with Phonos in the early 1970s. You change the sound of the festival recordings in real time, remixing concerts whose musicians, the museum says, were up against public apathy.
It's a single installation, so pair it with the permanent collection. Entry is the museum ticket, €6 (€4.50 reduced), free on Thursdays 6pm to 9pm and Sundays from 3pm, on the second floor of L'Auditori. The opening on 29 October at 7pm is free, with a live activation by Judith K.
The magnetic instrument
Modelled on the 1970s Stokos IV synthesiser, it lets you alter the sound parameters of the 1989 festival recordings in real time.
Under-16s get into the museum free.
