The Wien Museum's main building on Karlsplatz, designed by Oswald Haerdtl in the 1950s, reopened on 6 December 2023 after a renovation and extension by Certov, Winkler + Ruck that added two storeys and a new entrance pavilion. Its free permanent exhibition, "Wien. Meine Geschichte", traces Vienna's history over three floors and 1,700 objects, from the first settlements to the present. Highlights include Gustav Klimt's 1902 portrait of Emilie Flöge, a five-metre model of St. Stephen's Cathedral and Poldi, the ten-metre Prater whale. Special exhibitions fill the top floor, where a café opens onto a free terrace overlooking the city centre.
