Haus der Musik opened in 2000 as Austria's first museum of sound and music, set in the Palais Erzherzog Carl, where Otto Nicolai lived when he founded the Vienna Philharmonic in 1842. Four floors take you from the orchestra's own archive and museum, through the hands-on Sonotopia sound lab, to rooms devoted to Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss and Mahler. Upstairs you can take up the baton and conduct the Vienna Philharmonic on screen as the Virtual Conductor.
