Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus occupies the Florentine-style villa built for painter Franz von Lenbach in 1887-1891, expanded in 2013 with a golden metal-clad wing by Norman Foster. It holds the world's largest collection of works by Der Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider), the Munich-born Expressionist movement of Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Paul Klee and Gabriele Münter, alongside 19th-century Munich painting and contemporary art. The adjoining Kunstbau exhibition hall, built into the roof of Königsplatz U-Bahn station, is closed for energy-efficient renovation through 2026.
