The Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst (SMÄK) houses Bavaria's state collection of ancient Egyptian and Nubian/Sudanese art, begun in the 16th century under Duke Albrecht V. Since 2013 it occupies a subterranean building by architect Peter Böhm opposite the Alte Pinakothek, its dim, tomb-like galleries evoking Egyptian burial chambers. Highlights include royal statuary of Niuserre, Ramses II and Akhenaten, the gold treasure of Amanishakheto, and the world's oldest dated glass vessel.
