Built 1816-1830 by Leo von Klenze for King Ludwig I, the Glyptothek is a neoclassical temple of art on Königsplatz holding Ludwig's collection of Greek and Roman sculpture. Its top-lit halls display the Aegina pediments, the Barberini Faun and the Rondanini Medusa alongside Roman portrait busts, reliefs and mosaics, spanning the Archaic period to Late Antiquity. Bombed in WWII and rebuilt with bare limestone floors, it reopened in 1972 and shares its Königsplatz forecourt with the Staatliche Antikensammlungen opposite.
