A full-scale reconstruction of Marta Minujín and Rubén Santantonín 1965 immersive installation, alongside a survey of Minujín happenings and participatory actions from 1963-1985.
Preview: written before the show opened
Eleven rooms lead you from a neon-lit street to a swamp, past a room that reeks of fried chicken. In one a married couple reads newspapers in bed. In another, a beauty salon, you can choose make-up or a quick massage. That is La Menesunda, made in 1965 by Marta Minujín and Rubén Santantonín.
The Madrid version is the reconstruction the Museo Moderno in Buenos Aires built in 2015 from photographs, films and archive material, in consultation with Minujín. "Menesunda" is Argentine lunfardo for mayhem. Alongside it, a documentary section collects her happenings, performances and participatory actions from 1963 to 1985, in photographs, drawings and archival material. It is on floor 0 of the Nouvel Building.
A neon street with a fried-chicken room is also a decent description of Gran Vía at 2am, only here it is daylight and you get a make-up touch-up.
Tickets are €12, and entry is free Monday to Saturday 19:00 to 21:00. The show opens on 18 November.
Eleven rooms run from a neon-lit street to a swamp, past a room that smells of fried chicken and a beauty salon in a giant woman's head that does your make-up. It reconstructs Minujín's 1965 Buenos Aires maze.
The neon-lit street
The first stretch of the maze is a street lit in neon, a stand-in for Buenos Aires.
The fried-chicken room
One room is described in the press material as reeking of fried chicken, so the smell reaches you before the sight.
The bedroom
A married couple sits in bed reading newspapers while you pass through.
The beauty salon
Set inside a giant woman's head, where visitors can have make-up applied or choose a quick massage.
The mirrored confetti room
Your presence sets off a breeze, with confetti moving between mirrored walls.
