The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza houses one of the world's finest private art collections, assembled by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family and bought by the Spanish state in 1993. Spanning Italian primitives to 20th-century avant-garde, it completes Madrid's 'Golden Triangle of Art' alongside the Prado and Reina Sofia. The museum occupies the 18th-century Palacio de Villahermosa on Paseo del Prado, renovated by architect Rafael Moneo for its 1992 opening.
