CaixaForum Madrid occupies a former 1899 electrical power station on Paseo del Prado, transformed between 2001 and 2007 by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron into a cultural centre that appears to float above street level. Its plaza is fronted by Patrick Blanc's vertical garden, one of Madrid's most photographed green walls. The centre keeps no permanent collection; instead it runs a changing programme of major touring exhibitions spanning art, archaeology, history and science, alongside concerts, talks and family activities. It sits in the heart of Madrid's Paseo del Arte, a short walk from the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofia museums.
