Opened in 1933 as the Kyoto Enthronement Memorial Museum of Art, the former Kyoto City Museum of Art reopened in 2020 after a major renovation, with Kyocera holding the naming rights. Its collection of about 4,500 works focuses on modern Kyoto art, above all Nihonga painting by artists such as Takeuchi Seiho and Uemura Shoen, shown in seasonal Collection Room displays. Large special exhibitions fill the main building and the new Higashiyama Cube, while The Triangle, a free basement space, showcases emerging Kyoto artists.
