Founded in 1963 as an annex of Tokyo's national modern art museum, MoMAK moved into its current building by architect Maki Fumihiko in 1986, facing Okazaki Park near Heian Shrine. Its collection of some 17,000 works puts particular weight on nihonga (Japanese-style painting) and crafts from the Kyoto region, including the Kawakatsu Collection of ceramics by Kawai Kanjiro. Rotating Collection Gallery displays on the 4th floor run alongside major special exhibitions of Japanese and international art, design, photography and crafts.
