Built from 1712 by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt as the residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Lower Belvedere is the palace at the foot of the Belvedere gardens. Its Baroque state rooms, including the Hall of Grotesques, the Marble Gallery and the Gold Cabinet, sit alongside rooms, the Orangery and the Palace Stables used by the Belvedere museum for temporary exhibitions. The former stables also house the Gallery Middle Ages and Renaissance, with highlights such as Rueland Frueauf the Elder's Salzburg Altar.
