Designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt and completed in 1723 as the ceremonial summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Upper Belvedere looks down over Baroque gardens towards the Lower Belvedere. Today it houses the Belvedere's collection display "Picture this!", running from Cranach to Maria Lassnig, with Gustav Klimt's The Kiss, works by Egon Schiele and Franz Xaver Messerschmidt's Character Heads among its highlights. The palace's Carlone Hall hosts changing contemporary installations.
