Feminist Futures Forever

Preview: written before the show opened

In spring 1985, Silvia Eiblmayr and VALIE EXPORT filled this building, then the Museum des 20. Jahrhunderts, with Kunst mit Eigen-Sinn, an international exhibition of contemporary art by women. Both are among the 18 people interviewed for the new show's Oral Herstory, along with Elsa Prochazka, who designed the 1985 exhibition architecture.

The 2026 show picks up from there with 237 artists, from Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Yoko Ono to Maria Lassnig and Florentina Holzinger, on gender, the body, labour, desire and memory. The Belvedere's recent acquisitions play a central part. You walk through rooms that Dorit Margreiter Choy and Cosma Grosser modelled on everyday life rather than on a gallery, and Ulrike Müller's Herstory Inventory adds 100 feminist drawings by 100 artists.

Nobody has reviewed it yet, so come for the range and the archive. Admission is €12, €8 for students under 26 and over-65s, free under 19. It stays open until 9pm on Thursdays, and the 312-page catalogue (€39) goes on sale there in November.
