One of Europe's oldest public museums, founded on the antiquities bequeathed to the Republic by Cardinal Domenico Grimani in 1523 and his nephew Giovanni Grimani in 1587. Since 1926 it has occupied rooms of the Procuratie Nuove, the former Royal Palace on Piazza San Marco. Its collections, among the most important of Greek and Roman antiquities in northern Italy, span Greece and Asia Minor, Rome, the Veneto and Adriatic, and Egypt and the Near East, including sculpture, portrait busts, ceramics, gems and coins. The museum reopened its own entrance on the Piazzetta in 2025.
