Founded in 1895, La Biennale di Venezia stages the International Art Exhibition in even years and the Architecture Exhibition in odd years across two main venues. The Giardini hold the Central Pavilion and around 30 national pavilions, some designed by architects such as Carlo Scarpa, Alvar Aalto, Josef Hoffmann and Gerrit Rietveld. The Arsenale, Venice's former naval shipyard, adds the vast Corderie rope-works, the Artiglierie, the Italian Pavilion and further national pavilions.
