Sculptor Haneyl Choi on the body's involuntary rhythms and moments when body and consciousness fall out of sync, such as hypnic jerks, drunken lurching and sleepwalking.
Preview: written before the show opened
The Korean title is 이갈이, teeth grinding. Haneyl Choi draws on his own sleepwalking and teeth grinding, and Art Sonje says the starting point was seeing the cross-section of his own injured finger, which sent him to the body under the skin and the rhythms it keeps outside conscious control.
The show, in Space 1, is about the moments when body and mind come apart: drunken lurching, sleepwalking, the jerk that wakes you just as you drop off. The Korean text names what gets tangled in one body there: control and failure, intimacy and violence, shame and seduction. Choi is a sculptor, and his earlier shows had muscle-bound male figures and hybrid objects in resin, silicone and steel. Four sculptures under the same title were at P21's Art Basel Paris booth this October.
Art Sonje opens Tuesday to Sunday, noon to 6pm, and its all-exhibition ticket is 10,000 won. From Anguk Station (Line 3), take Exit 1 toward Jeongdok Library.
