iArt Sonje Center · Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu
A 90-minute sound play with no projected image: three linked plays set in a fictional underground club, heard from the Art Hall's basement theatre before an empty screen.
Preview: written before the show opened
You sit in a basement theatre facing an empty screen, and it stays empty for 90 minutes. Art Sonje calls the piece a "film without a screen": dialogue, music, ambience and foley build every scene, and there is nothing to look at.
The sound play is three linked stories set in Waits, an invented underground club, each built around the moments before, during or after a performance. It is the work of 2mc1dj, a collective formed this year by Heecheon Kim, Haryung Lee and Seungtaek Hong, who come from moving image, music and literature. A club you can only hear, from a seat, is your neighbour's Saturday night through the officetel wall.
It plays in the Art Hall, Art Sonje's basement theatre, Tuesday to Sunday from noon to 6pm. Art Hall programmes are priced separately from the galleries, so check the show page before you go. In November the collective plans a late-night radio show over the hall's speakers, taking questions by phone and text.
Waits, the club you never see
All three plays happen in this fictional underground club, before, during and after a gig, and you build the room entirely from voices, music and foley.
Event Volume 3 (FM)
A late-night radio show planned for November, broadcast through the Art Hall speakers, where the three artists talk with a host and take your calls and texts.
The band come
The radio broadcast closes on a recording by come, the band that features in Seungtaek Hong's sound play Under One Umbrella.
