Founded in 1935 as the first West Coast museum devoted to modern and contemporary art, SFMOMA holds some 33,000 works, including the Fisher Collection's 1,100 postwar pieces, Duchamp's Fountain and Diego Rivera's The Flower Carrier. Mario Botta's 1995 building with its striped oculus is now wrapped by Snøhetta's 2016 expansion, which more than doubled the gallery space and added a vertical living wall. Its ground-floor galleries and atrium are free to walk into, and it sits steps from Yerba Buena Gardens.
