Opened in 1993 on the edge of Yerba Buena Gardens in SoMa, YBCA is a contemporary arts centre with no permanent collection: its galleries, in a building designed by Fumihiko Maki, host changing exhibitions by local, national and international artists. The campus also includes the Blue Shield of California Theater across the gardens, used for performance and film. The galleries are free for everyone on Wednesdays, when they stay open until 8pm.
