Themes + Projects and Gallery 16 survey Bay Area artist Rex Ray's collages, resin panels and pigment prints from 2000 to 2014.
No. 0962 is not even a foot tall: painted, cut and pasted paper on a wood panel, sealed under resin, from 2003. At the other end of the scale, Cladinina, a pigment print from 2012, is five feet high. Those two formats, plus collages on canvas, make up this survey of Rex Ray's work from 2000 to 2014, the year before he died.
Themes+Projects shows it with Gallery 16, which worked with Ray from 1995 and now looks after his estate. Ray worked where fine art meets graphic design, and musicians, designers and cultural institutions hired him too. Themes+Projects first showed him in 2002, back when it was in Palo Alto.
You walk into a gallery suite, not a museum hall: Suite 205 at 1275 Minnesota St. Entry is free, Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 5pm, until 31 October. For the whole career, the Monterey Museum of Art has his retrospective until January 2027.
You want his whole career: this is a gallery survey of 2000 to 2014, and the retrospective is in Monterey.
