Preview: written before the show opened

The Black Panther Party reported on its own work in its own newspaper, and these are the original issues from its first five years, 1967 to 1971. Their pages cover the trials, the neighborhood patrols, the Free Breakfast Program, public health education, housing, the survival programs and the Ten Point Program.

You climb to the museum gallery on the second floor of AAMLO's Beaux-Arts former library to read them, in the city where the Party was formed 60 years ago. The show is part of the library's anniversary program.

Admission is free and self-guided visits need no reservation; AAMLO is closed on Sundays and opens at noon on Fridays. On opening day, 24 October, the gallery screens 23 archival film clips of the Party from 1967 to 1979 (2pm to 4pm, with online registration), then holds a reception from 5pm to 7pm. The Main Library's Oakland History Center runs a separate rank-and-file exhibit, curated by Party historian Billy X Jennings, until 9 January 2027.
