Zedekiah Gonsalves Schild: A Verb Meaning to Wash One's Wounds in an Ocean

Now showing3 October 2026 – 19 December 2026·Free

Installation at Slash linking ecological upheaval and disability: videos of floods and wounds set in mahogany sculptures or prison TVs, with copper and relief-print wall maps.

A man with a badly injured arm runs into the sea to hold his wound in the water. Zedekiah Gonsalves Schild came across that image in Dionne Brand's A Map to the Door of No Return, and it gave this installation its title.

You walk into /room/, Slash's project space, and find videos where you might expect objects. Some are set into sculptures of Batu mahogany, a hardwood used in maritime construction; others play on the clear-cased TVs that are the only sets allowed in prisons. The footage mixes floods in Oakland and rural Arizona, filmed by the artist between 2023 and 2026, with wounds and site-specific performances. Gonsalves Schild worked as a builder until a spinal cord injury in 2019, and the wall grids of relief prints and hammered copper act as maps of his body and as a key to the room.

Entry is free and the gallery is wheelchair accessible. Slash opens Thursday to Saturday only, 11am to 6pm, in Building B at 1150 25th St.

Look for

  • The mahogany video sculptures

Look for screens set into blocks of Batu mahogany, a heavy hardwood from maritime construction, showing the artist's own flood footage.

  • The prison TVs

Other videos play on the only TV sets allowed in prisons, each encased in a clear polycarbonate shell.

  • The wall maps

Grids of relief prints, hammered copper and found materials repeat a wave, a leg, a wheelchair and a six-gallon water container as a key to the room.

  • Floods in Oakland and Arizona

Footage the artist shot between 2023 and 2026 of flooding in Oakland and rural Arizona runs alongside images of bodily wounds.
