iMinnesota Street Project · Dogpatch
Chandler Gallery group show of 17 artists on the natural world, from natural-history precision to abstraction, incl. Squeak Carnwath and Tiffany Bozic.
A real magnolia leaf, coated in ultramarine pigment until it's one flat blue, sits in a small wooden box behind glass. It's Mari Andrews's, and the plainest case of what the press text says several of these 17 artists do: build the work out of nature itself.
Others paint it. Jamie Emerick has a six-foot canvas of sea ice cracking into plates seen from above, and a study of an Adélie penguin's skull and ribs. Adam Wolpert hangs twenty panels of one wooded lake. Gianluca Franzese lays his landscapes in six kinds of metal leaf, up to 22k gold. Get close to Renée Bott's four-foot hare and the woven tapestry turns out to be paint and collage on silk. In a neighbourhood called Dogpatch, Ryan Steadman's pet on a leash is a cat.
No critic has reviewed it. Entry is free, and part of the proceeds goes to the conservation nonprofit Art into Acres. Gallery C, 1150 25th St, Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 5pm, until 24 October.
Real Blue Magnolia
Look for a real magnolia leaf, stem and all, coated in ultramarine pigment and boxed in wood and glass like a specimen.
Fast Ice
Emerick's six-foot canvas looks down on white sea ice, grey open water and a black rocky shore, with the ice breaking into floating plates along the bottom.
Lake Series I
Twenty small oil panels of the same wooded lake in a grid, the trees moving through green, yellow and orange and doubled in the water.
Tapestry Tales: Hartfield Hare
A four-foot square that mimics a woven forest tapestry, with a small hare under the trees and a flowered border, made in paint and collage on silk.
Leashed
Steadman's white cat in a maroon harness picks its way over rocks on a leash, with thick dabs of yellow paint scattered across the green behind it.
You want one artist in depth: it's 17 artists, most with one to four works each.
