BLACK INTERIORS: Celebrating 5 Years of Black (Space) Residency

Last chance19 September 2026 – 31 October 2026·Free

Atrium retrospective of alumni of Black (Space) Residency, the MSP Studios program for Black Bay Area creatives, curated by Erica Deeman and Trina Michelle Robinson.

When Erica Deeman got into graduate school at UC Berkeley, she could have sublet her below-market studio at Minnesota Street Project Studios. She kept it for Black creatives instead, and in 2020 she and Ashara Ekundayo turned it into Black (Space) Residency: a free studio with a wood shop, darkroom and kiln, a small stipend, and no duty to make anything at all.

This show is five years of what came out of that room. Twenty-nine alumni fill the Atrium at 1275 Minnesota St with visual, material and literary work, and co-curator Trina Michelle Robinson is a former resident herself. Deeman once said a fellow who "wants to just do yoga in the studio for a month" can do exactly that, so you walk in knowing none of this work was owed.

The gallery's page singles out no individual works, so come for the spread of a Bay Area community rather than one star piece. Entry is free, Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm, until 31 October.
