Alex Weinstein: I'll Be Your Mirror

Ended9 September 2026 – 17 October 2026·Free

This exhibition has ended.

Abstract and landscape paintings cued to the fading Western sky over Los Angeles by Alex Weinstein, at Nancy Toomey Fine Art.

Museum website

An eight-foot painting of the sea at night, grey waves churning under moonlight, hangs a few steps from canvases that fade from hot pink to pale yellow, like the sky after sunset. Los Angeles painter Alex Weinstein made both over the past year, and the gallery says the skies led him to the seas.

You walk into colour first. The skies are near-pure gradients with nothing drawn in them. In a few he adds hard edges: Holding Hands stacks three panels so the seams read as horizon lines, his stand-in for the rooftops and power lines that frame an LA sunset. Small panels borrow song titles (Fade into You, Comfortably Numb), and the show is named after the Velvet Underground song Nico sang in 1967. These are LA sunsets, hung in a city whose evening sky usually belongs to Karl the Fog.

Entry is free. Nancy Toomey Fine Art is inside 1275 Minnesota St, open Tuesday to Saturday, 12 to 4pm. It closes Saturday 17 October.

Look for

  • Blue Note

Look for the eight-foot canvas of grey-blue waves churning under moonlight, with streaks of paint running down from a dark sky.

  • Big Baby

The other eight-footer: a pale curtain of light falls into a rough grey sea, and paint drips off the bottom edge.

  • Holding Hands

Three stacked panels each fade from dark violet to pale pink, so the joins between them read as three horizon lines.

  • Celestial Seasonings (Los Angeles International Airport)

A panel barely bigger than a sheet of paper, fading from night blue at the top to orange at the bottom, named after LAX.

Good for

  • Cheap Culture
  • Locals Who've Seen It All
