Ha Chong-Hyun: Retrospective

Among the paintings sits a display of Ha Chong-Hyun's tools: wire brushes, wide spatulas, wooden spoons. They are how he pushes thick paint through burlap from the back, the method behind his Conjunction series since 1974. Ha is 91, and the surfaces still bulge where the paint broke through. It's the last of the toothpaste you refuse to throw away, for six decades.

More than 50 paintings are on view, from early 1960s pieces with embedded thread and flame-scorched passages, through the White Paper on Urban Planning grids, to recent work in primary colours, char and ash. Some canvases stand eight feet tall. White lines on the floor mark how close you may stand, because several surfaces are tactile and fragile.

This is the first North American museum survey of Ha, in the Yamazaki Pavilion. Museum admission is $20, and the museum is open until 8 PM on Thursdays. Check the ticketing page for the $10 special-exhibition ticket.
