iLa Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GNAM) · Pinciano
Ten loans by Giorgio de Chirico shown with the gallery's Metaphysical collection, plus architectural drawings and photographs that read Rome as a "metaphysical city".
You walk into what was the Boccioni room and the Futurist rush is gone. Renamed Sala Metafisica for the show, it hangs Carrà, Morandi and Sironi in light kept low for Del Debbio's temperas, with cases of architectural drawings by Del Debbio and Libera and EUR archive photographs down the middle.
The larger second room is de Chirico's. The light deepens and the hang builds to a run of his Piazze d'Italia. Ten loans come from Milan's Museo del Novecento, Brera and Casa Boschi Di Stefano and Rome's Museo Bilotti, among them Il figliol prodigo. If EUR on a Sunday, all arches and no people, has ever spooked you, the first room's cases show where that mood was drawn.
Il Riformista calls it a focus woven into the permanent route rather than a standalone show, so plan it as two rooms inside a wider visit. It is included in the €17 ticket, and on Thursdays until 17 December the gallery stays open to 11pm for €10.
The Piazze d'Italia sequence
In the de Chirico room the hang speeds up into a run of his Italian squares, urban space made strange and enigmatic, under the room's stronger light.
Il figliol prodigo
Look for the prodigal son as a mannequin, his father a stone statue resting a hand on his shoulder.
The EUR cases in the Sala Metafisica
Display cases down the middle of the first room hold Del Debbio and Libera's architectural drawings and archive photographs from Ente EUR and MAXXI.
You want a full de Chirico retrospective: it is two rooms folded into the permanent collection.
