Preview: written before the show opened

One of the four canvases in Sala 9 is a portrait of the cyclist Marco Pantani, painted in 2005 for Ennio Calabria's series of faces, Un volto e il tempo. The other three are set by the sea.

The reason for the show is a gift. Donna e mare (1992), an acrylic of 160 by 120 cm, was donated by Rita Pedonesi, the heir who runs Calabria's archive, and now joins the permanent collection. You see it hung beside its pair from the same 1990s cycle, Uomo che guarda il mare, where the figures on the shore keep changing shape. Patologia della luce (2012) goes back to the beach twenty years later. Calabria, who died in 2024, came out of the Nuova Figurazione of the 1950s and 60s, and earned the label "pittore filosofo".

Four paintings in one room: add it to a visit to the collection. Entry is in the €17 gallery ticket, Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 7pm, from 27 October to 29 November.
