Museo dell'Ara Pacis

ArchaeologyHistoryArtClosed todayFrom €14Spagna (Metro Line A), approx. 10-min walk

The Museo dell'Ara Pacis houses the Ara Pacis Augustae, the marble Altar of Augustan Peace voted by the Senate in 13 BC, consecrated in 9 BC, and painstakingly reassembled in 1938 from fragments scattered over centuries. Its carved enclosure pairs delicate acanthus scrolls with mythological panels and a procession of Augustus's family. The monument stands inside a luminous pavilion of steel, travertine, glass and plaster designed by American architect Richard Meier, the first major contemporary building in Rome's historic centre since the Fascist era.
