Two-artist show pairing new marble work by Hank Willis Thomas, such as I AM (I AM AM I; I AM HUMAN...), with vintage Man Ray prints including a 1952 possible self portrait.
One of Hank Willis Thomas's new pieces is a print on retroreflective vinyl, shown both in ordinary light and lit up. Stand in front of it unlit and you get one picture. Thomas says these images "remain quiet and still until struck by a flash or beam of light", and then a second, hidden image comes out of the first.
Six 2026 works by Thomas sit beside six by Man Ray, from a 1952 vintage silver print titled Possible self portrait to small wood objects and a 1972 bronze. Thomas carves single gestures, two clasped hands or a fist raised in solidarity, in veined marble. He first tried Man Ray's photograms in a makeshift darkroom in his mother's kitchen. The other half of the project is at Continua's San Gimignano gallery.
It's a compact show for anyone curious how a living artist answers Man Ray. It sits inside The St. Regis Rome, open Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 1pm and 2pm to 7pm, until 31 December.
I never knew what I was doing until I was done
Look for Thomas's retroreflective vinyl print, shown both in ambient light and lit up, so you can see the hidden second image appear.
Gestures in veined marble
Thomas's new sculptures in Estremoz, Marquina and pele de tigre marble isolate single gestures, such as two clasped hands or a raised fist, and make them monumental.
