Palazzo Barberini is a monumental 17th-century Baroque palace, begun by Carlo Maderno and completed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini for the family of Pope Urban VIII. Since the mid-20th century it has housed the Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica, whose collection spans the 13th to 18th centuries with masterpieces by Raphael, Caravaggio, Hans Holbein and Guido Reni. Its grand salone is crowned by Pietro da Cortona's vast ceiling fresco, the Triumph of Divine Providence, one of the defining images of the Roman Baroque.
