iMusée du Luxembourg · Saint-Germain-des-Prés
About 150 drawings, plus paintings, silkscreens, photographs and archives, trace Warhol's drawn work from a 1942 self-portrait to The Last Supper in 1986.
In the first room, among monkeys and a shoe on a wheel, you'll find 1950s ink cats, one of them in a hat, seated on a hat. In the next room, a folding screen carries the wobbly alphabet of Warhol's mother, Julia Warhola, who lettered his commercial jobs. When she grew too frail, his assistants copied her hand and he had it made into Letraset. Your mum's handwriting is on a birthday card in a drawer.
About 150 drawings, ten or so paintings, Polaroids, film and archives fill five themed rooms: early illustration, lettering, faces and masks, a room of erotic drawings of men, and death, from skulls to Last Supper studies made in 1986. Paris ZigZag liked the focus on Warhol the draughtsman but found the wall texts "sommaires" and the route "assez flottant", and advises reading up on him first.
Tickets are €14, free under 16, with free booked places for 16 to 25s while they last. Open daily 10:30 to 19:00, until 22:00 on Mondays.
Julia Warhola's folding screen
Look for the screen his mother painted in tempera, her alphabet swelling into big arabesques and signed 'Andy Warhol's Mother'.
The cats
Look for 1950s ink cats in the first room, including one in a hat seated on a hat and the cover drawing for 25 Cats Name[d] Sam and One Blue Pussy.
Skull, around 1976
A photograph of a skull Warhol bought from a Paris antiques dealer, worked over in grease pencil, the start of his Skulls series.
The Last Supper (Be a Somebody with a Body)
Christ, partly swallowed by a thickly painted black ground, stands in front of a bodybuilder, with an advertising slogan's lettering left blank in the paint.
Screen Tests
Silent black-and-white film portraits of about four and a half minutes each, among them Marcel Duchamp in 1966.
You want the big Pop canvases: this is mostly drawings, with only about ten paintings.
Free for under 16s, with a games booklet (livret jeux) from the museum and family tours from age 6 on Sundays at 14:30. One room is erotic drawings of men.
