France's national museum of the Middle Ages occupies a remarkable pairing of buildings: the Gallo-Roman Thermes de Cluny, with its soaring 1st-century frigidarium, and the flamboyant Gothic Hôtel de Cluny. Its collection of some 23,000 medieval objects spans tapestries, stained glass, ivories, sculpture and goldwork. The undisputed star is the six-panel Lady and the Unicorn tapestry cycle, one of the great masterpieces of European art. A major "Cluny 4" renovation, completed in 2022, reorganised the galleries and added a new glass entrance pavilion.
