iBourse de Commerce - Pinault Collection · 1er arrondissement
Around fifty photographs from the Pinault Collection by photojournalist Raymond Depardon, drawn from his long-term documentary series "La France" on provincial landscapes and small towns, shown in Gallery 3.
Raymond Depardon allowed himself one picture per town. From the 1980s he drove around France in a van with a large-format camera on a tripod, set it up once in each place and moved on. The rule, the museum says, was there to slow his looking down.
Gallery 3 holds about fifty of the results, all from the Pinault Collection and all in colour. You walk in to shopfronts, cafés, detached houses, roads and town squares, many of them in sub-prefectures, the towns that are neither city nor countryside. One shows Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire, in the Nièvre, in 2009. This is the France the TGV crosses without stopping.
Curator Matthieu Humery calls the eye "critical and benevolent, full of humour", and says twenty-year-olds will find it almost another era. The room is part of Remember Me, so one ticket (€15, €10 for ages 18 to 26, free under 18) also covers Irving Penn in Gallery 2. Fridays run to 9pm.
You want Depardon the news photographer: these are quiet views of shops, houses and roads.
Entry is free for under-18s.
